The Lynx Women
Iron Age women buried with lynx pelts
Through discoveries of lynx claw bones in graves dating from the Migration Period and the Vendel Period, the exhibition offers a unique insight into women who may have held a special ritual role in society. Often richly adorned and connected to high-status farms, these women appear to have occupied a distinctive position in Iron Age communities.
Who were these "Lynx Women"? Were they leaders, priestesses, or perhaps symbolically protected by the goddess Freyja?
In this exhibition, archaeologist Torun Zachrisson presents the stories of these enigmatic women, their possible ritual significance, and the traces the lynx has left in graves, mythology and archaeology.
