The Professor's House

The Professor's House the Walmstedt Cultural Quarter

Step into history and experience the home of a nineteenth-century upper-middle-class family. Admire elegant beadwork, polished copperware and period interiors from a time before running water and indoor toilets.

On the upper floor of the house is the apartment of Professor Herman Rydin, a reconstruction of the home that the Rydin family rented in the Walmstedt Cultural Quarter from 1860. The six-room apartment with kitchen recreates the atmosphere of a prosperous Uppsala home in the late nineteenth century.

Herman Rydin was Professor of Constitutional, International and Ecclesiastical Law at Uppsala University. Following the death of his wife, Eleonora ("Nora") Rydin, in 1865, he continued to live in the apartment with his children. The household was managed by the family's domestic servants, providing a glimpse into everyday life in a well-to-do nineteenth-century home.

Opening Hours

During 2026, guided tours of The Professor's House are offered every Saturday and Sunday at 3.00 pm. Please see the Upplandsmuseet calendar for current dates.

Private group tours can also be booked.

Admission

Guided tours are included with admission to Upplandsmuseet or an Annual Pass. Admission is free for children and young people up to the age of 19.
